Understanding Search Engine Optimization: Common Mistakes and Fixes

Common SEO Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some of the top SEO mistakes made by beginners when trying to get traffic to their site! These common mistakes can hurt their chances of ranking well in search results and losing potential visitors. Many beginners ignore keyword research, which results in content that doesn’t appeal to target audiences. They often forget about on-page SEO, such as using meta tags and headers correctly, which helps search engines understand the content. Additionally, not having a mobile-friendly site can drive away a lot of users since mobile optimization is essential today. It’s also important to think about the site’s loading speed, as slow sites usually have higher bounce rates, which means visitors leave quickly. By fixing these problems, beginners can improve their SEO efforts and attract more traffic to their websites.

Is your Site Crawlable?

Common SEO mistakes to avoid

Make sure your site is crawlable by Google by ensuring that your robots.txt file allows indexing. If you see “Disallow” in your robots.txt file, Google cannot crawl your website! Crawling occurs when a bot is permitted to visit your site, navigate its pages, and collect information that enables your content to appear in search results.

Here is an example of a robots.txt file. If you are using WordPress you can find it in your robots.txt file.

Check your Sitemap

The second thing you should ensure you have is a sitemap. A sitemap is an XML file that will show all the pages you have created and it tells Google that you want Google to index it. Not sure where to find your sitemap? Simply type into the search bar your domain name.com/sitemap_index.xml. If it shows an error page you do not have a sitemap.

Monitor Ahrefs

Another mistake when it comes to search engine optimization is not monitoring the errors on your site through Ahrefs, which can lead to significant drawbacks in your website’s performance and visibility. By neglecting to regularly check for issues such as broken links, 404 errors, and sitemap discrepancies, you risk diminishing your site’s credibility in the eyes of search engines. Moreover, without utilizing tools like Ahrefs to track these errors, you may miss out on crucial opportunities to improve your content and refine your strategies, ultimately hindering your ability to attract organic traffic and engage your audience effectively. Regular monitoring is key to maintaining a healthy website, ensuring that all components are functioning smoothly, and that any potential obstacles are swiftly addressed.

Don’t forget to create a Google Business Profile for your Business

A Google Business Profile allows a business to control how they appear in Google Search and maps. It can be useful because it allows you to show what time your business may be open, location, your website and customer reviews.

Without a Google business profile, customers may struggle to find your business on Google Maps, especially when many people rely on maps to navigate. A Google Business Profile also makes it incredibly easier for customers to contact you with questions they may have.

Does your site look decent on mobile?

A lot of new web developers may forget that their site will be used by 62 to 64% of users. So we need to design our website in a way that looks appealing to mobile users. Be sure to make buttons appropriate sizes and make sure content isn’t too crowded for mobile users. Use simple short menus and make sure to avoid using annoying pop ups.

Now you got the hang of it!

Many SEO mistakes can harm a website’s visibility, but they can be avoided with awareness. Common errors include making a site uncrawlable due to a restrictive robots.txt file, neglecting to provide a sitemap, failing to monitor site health with tools like Ahrefs or Google Search Console, and not claiming a Google Business Profile, which limits local SEO advantages. Additionally, ignoring mobile optimization can lead to lost users, and disregarding advanced practices like Core Web Vitals and structured data can impact technical performance and search results. Addressing these mistakes ensures better SEO performance.
